Inside the Home Maintenance Guide

The guide provides a structured overview of common residential systems and key maintenance considerations, including:
  • Planning and preparation for home system awareness

  • Plumbing fixtures and common maintenance considerations

  • Electrical systems and safety devices

  • Heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems

  • Exterior maintenance awareness for roofs, gutters, and siding

  • Windows, doors, and exterior envelope considerations

  • Garage doors and mechanical components

  • Interior hardware, surfaces, and flooring awareness

The goal of this system is to support greater understanding of how residential systems function and interact throughout the home, while providing a practical framework for planning and maintaining key areas over time—encouraging a preventive approach to home maintenance rather than a reactive one.

This system is designed to help homeowners take a more confident and proactive approach to maintaining their home.

Printed guides are made available through the Education Forward initiative with the support of participating community organizations.
